Others Have Done The Hard Work

This passage from John struck me today. Jesus said:

"[O]pen your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. Thus the saying 'One sows and another reaps' is true. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor." (NIV, John 4:34b-38)

A Sea of Knowledge

I sometimes take issue with Pastor John MacArthur's teaching because he doesn't fully see the kingdom truths that God allowed Pastor Whipple to see. But in no way do I mean to disparage him. Pastor MacArthur has been gifted by God with a tremendous intellect and deep insights into the Word. He is also an excellent preacher and writer.

Regarding the latter talent, I particularly admire his ability to put, as Pastor Whipple might say, "a sea of knowledge into a drop of language." (My first career was in the journalism profession, where this skill is taught and highly valued.) His devotional for today is a great example. Pastor MacArthur writes:

Many people mistakenly believe that one's religious preference is irrelevant because all religions eventually lead to the same spiritual destination.

Such thinking is sheer folly, however, because Scripture declares that no one comes to God apart from Jesus (John 14:6). He is the only source of salvation (Acts 4:12) and the only One powerful enough to redeem us and hold us secure forever (John 10:28).

There, in one paragraph, are three of the most important points the Bible makes about the uniqueness and necessity of our Savior. It would be good for all of us to keep these verses handy for when this discussion arises, as it often does, with unbelievers.
